Hey everyone! I realize it seems like I fell off the wagon during the holidays. Between the festivities and my determination to get organized for the new year, I haven't really been out shooting in a while. Seems like most days I plan on going; I make excuses like: the clouds are gone, it's too cold, it's too sunny right now, or ugh that place is too far.
I'm still fighting the urge to get out of town. As the first day at my new job approaches, I feel more and more pressure to do something exciting and memorable. Don't get me wrong, I have been 99.9 % set on going places and then I convince myself out of it for various reasons. I would be alone on a photo trip (because trust me, no one wants to go with me on a trip specifically for photography), which means a multitude of bad things could happen. I could get stuck in the snow, get my equipment stolen, fall off a cliff, have my tripod blow away, get car jacked, get lost, contract the Hanta virus, get eaten by an animal, or die a slow death and never make it back. There are other factors too, but I won't go on about it. So with my first day at a new job just 11 days away, and not being able to take a road trip, I decided to work on a project at home.
So I set out with the intent to build a home photography studio back in August. Yeah uh huh I realize that was last year! The thing is I ordered the equipment and set it up that month, but I never really figured out a good place for everything. To explain this, I need to give you some background. I happen to live with two guys in a three bedroom townhouse. Being that they are your typical all American type, they love sports and they really love their man cave. As much as I support their need to do..well man things, it's tough to figure out how to build a studio and block off this section so that clients don't see it when they come over. I mean the garage is only so big. After moving it around about 15 times, I finally settled. The only way for me to be productive in this studio was to be okay with shooting from the man cave. No curtain to block it off, it's just there right out in the open. So if any of you have the pleasure of stepping foot in my studio, I hope you like sports and have an appreciation for compromise and peace in a household. I really thought it was awful and embarrassing at first, but now I see that it adds some flare.
My first photo shoot in my new studio is tomorrow. I'll let you know how it goes ;)
